Commander Boyd had requested to meet off-base. Manx had reluctantly agreed – he wasn’t going to hand him another excuse to delay. He pulled the Jensen onto several hectares of freshly cut fields just off the A55, passing three large billboards welcoming him to this year’s Anglesey Agricultural Show. He drove past a crew of men ramming fence posts marking out the show perimeter, while a few hundred metres away a large crane lifted the poles supporting the main show pavilion. He parked and walked to the only other vehicle close by, a black Range Rover.

“Don’t want me snooping around the base, commander?” Manx said, making himself comfortable in the passenger seat. “If I was the suspicious type, I’d think you’d have something to hide.”

“I thought you lot thrived on suspicion,” he said, pronouncing the words “you lot” as if they fell sour on his mouth. “I’m told RAF Valley has always been heavily involved with the Anglesey Agricultural Show, hence my presence. What can I help you with?”

“One of your officers, Bobbie Matthews. She told me she’d informed you several days ago she’d seen Flynt driving from his home the night he disappeared, and here I am having to chase you down to verify those facts.”

The commander tapped his fingers on the steering wheel. “Flight Lieutenant Bobbie Matthews is… how shall I put this delicately? Mentally unstable.”

“That was delicate?” Manx said.

“I assume she informed you she’s being transferred to a psychiatric hospital at the end of the month?”

“She neglected to mention that, but I’m still curious. Did she tell you about seeing Flynt that night or not?”

“I have no recollection of such a meeting.”

“So does that mean it didn’t happen, or you just forgot? Busy man like you, I expect you’re in meetings all day.”

The commander pursed his lips. “No recollection means it never happened. Now if there’s nothing else, I’ve got a security audit to conduct,” he said, gesturing at two RAF officers walking from the showground. “What with the Duke and Duchess opening the show this year, the pressure’s on to oversee their safety.”

“Heavy lays the crown, right?” Manx said. “Do you know why Bobbie Matthews wanted to speak to Flynt that night?”

“Not a clue. Now if that’s all,” the commander said, checking his rear-view mirror and starting the engine.

Stepping out over the running boards, Manx turned to face the commander. “Oh, you should probably know, new evidence came to light today that strongly suggests Commander Flynt’s death wasn’t an accident. We’ll be stepping up our investigation a gear or two. Expect a visit from myself and my team in the next few days.”
